What Is Glutamine?
Glutamine is one of ten non-essential
amino acids. This is because it is naturally occurring in the body and can be
made by multiple tissues. For reassurance to those who are skeptical about taking
supplements, there aren’t any known side effects or health risks from
taking a reasonable dosage. Upset stomach and other regular health risks may
come about if too much is taken. Glutamine may also be ingested through protein
shakes, beans, meats, fish, dairy products, and legumes.
How Will Glutamine Help Me?
Glutamine can be a very powerful and helpful supplement
when it comes to extreme bodybuilding, working out, or basic fitness. Glutamine
is an important substance to your immune system. During an extreme workout,
your glutamine levels can drop down to as little as half of the original amount.
Glutamine & Immunity
This low level of glutamine puts a big hole in your immune
system’s functionality and can lead to getting sick. Some cells that take
part in your immune system’s functionality (such as your macrophages and
lymphocytes) need glutamine as a fuel source. When not getting enough glutamine,
these cells can’t function properly and synthesize the necessary nucleotides
for keeping you healthy. Getting sick can and often will ruin your diet and
performance, hindering your development. I have noticed that I often catch a
cold when I do not take my glutamine
for a period of time, while working out.
Glutamine & Muslce
Glutamine is known to play a strong role in protein metabolism,
your bodies ability to make use of protein. It also helps to prevent muscle
deterioration (protein catabolism). The body naturally uses glutamine and it
will take the glutamine out of your muscles, if not supplied with the necessary
amount. Some studies have even shown an increase of up to 400% in growth hormone
when supplementing with 2 and more grams of glutamine. Some bodybuilders have
been known to take around 10 or more grams of glutamine per day (taken during
different servings). Your personal amount taken should be determined by your
diet and training routine.
Glutamine and Your Mind
For those who have a hard time concentrating in the gym
or during sports, glutamine is here to help. It passes freely between the body
and brain and is converted into glutamic acid. Glutamic acid is helpful in preventing
the ruinous effects of alcohol on the brain and can help with alertness. |
