Form Over Weight

Something that always comes up when training with other people who are new to lifting, or just when I'm working out in the gym is the weight/ego/form issue.

I can't stress enough the importance of choosing good form over big weights.

It is hard to make yourself use good form if you are new to lifting. People often want to put big weights on, thinking they will get suchhh better gains. However, the truth is that they will get much better gains using good form.

This is one of the differences you will see when training with a personal trainer. A personal trainer will make you train with perfect form on every exercise - it is much easier for a partner to see your form as a whole.

When I began weight lifting with my friends, many of them would try to put up a lot of weight and do speedy reps. I started with a little smaller weight, followed correct speeds on my reps, and paid close attention to my form. Within two weeks I was lifting significantly more than them and had made much better gains.

Moral of the story: If you want the best results, leave your ego at the door and work out with good form, not big weights.
