Corrective Training Before Weight Lifting

Some gyms I have been to advertise that you should go through a corrective training (core program) prior to starting with weight lifting for making serious gains.

Would this actually be very beneficial - I'm new and cant tell if its them getting more sessions with me or legit?

Absolutely. Corrective training does a number of things that are beneficial especially for the newbie to training. It will strengthen your core so that you are able to give a strong base to support heavy lifts, which will make you stronger. It will also get your body into proper allignment so you don't develop dominant & weak syngergist muscle groups, which helps you to stay balanced. But, most importantly though, it will help keep you from getting injuried.

I continue to do corrective training for certain bodyparts that tend to be "naturally" out of balance for me. A few corrective excercises including stretching & core work is something many people forget about and is a tool that will both make you stronger & keep you from getting injured.
