Ectomorphic Training

Hello all. I am an extreme ectomorph, but that's not to say I'm not fit. I've been working out for the past year and a half religiously, and have seen fairly minimal gains. I know this is partly because I am young, but mostly because of my body type.

I've read on various workout sites about specific exercises that work better on ectomorphic body types, and was just curious if anyone out there has any knowledge/ experience in this aspect.

Re: Ectomorphic Training

I'd just like to add as a side note - to any ectomorphic guy who read my post and feels discouraged about never gaining lots of muscle mass - although I havent made great weight gains of muscle, the muscle I have gained looks very impressive to some people because of the low % of bodyfat that comes with it. So just dont give up is all I'm saying, because I know a lot of people like myself who have and it's a shame.

There are a few things you can do differently in the gym. But since you've only been working out for a year you should tackle your diet. How many cals are you eating? macro ratio? Most people blame their training, when they are actually not eating enough.

Re: Ectomorphic Training

I am a transformed ectomorph. 3 things happened between age 20 and 27 though. 1) I trained smarter, not harder. 2) I learned how to feed my body. 3) I let my age work for me. Testosterone levels were pretty high between the age of 20 and 23. I went from 129lbs at age 20 to 145lbs by age 23. I added another 15 lbs over the next 2 years. All without the help of AAS.

Everyone has a slightly different body type, but few people fall exactly into any of those catagories. Most people are a combination of them. Out of curiosity how old are you and what is your diet like?

Re: Ectomorphic Training

I agree with Chris, while training is important its really only about 40% of the battle that we call bodybuilding. The rest is diet you should be paying close attention to your specific caloric intake and what percentage of it is what. I don't particularly believe that there are better exercises for different body types but I do believe that most ectomorphs (or combinations) OVERTRAIN thinking it will bring them larger gains if they train everyday and for 60+ minutes... everybody will have a different oppinion as to what your diet should be like depending on there individual experience. what you need to do is take in as much information about ecto diet needs and create a game plan that seems to work... It can be frustrating at first because you will be doing a lot of experimenting but if you stick to it you can pack on the weight! GOOD LUCK

Re: Ectomorphic Training

Hey guys! Thanks for the input. Since I last posted that article at the beginning of the summer, I have completely gorged myself with meat and potatoes! heh. But seriously, I really ate a ton of calories and gained about 9-10 lbs over that period of time. Now Im pretty sure its all muscle because I havent really noticed any excess fat, but I cant really be sure without a caliper. But this really wasnt a bad thing, being at 125 to start and rising to 135 ish, even if it is fat it isnt really noticable, and a little fat makes gaining easier right?

To answer your question Chris, I am 17 in highschool and no sports other than bodybuilding. After looking at a bunch of websites concerning body types, I came to the conclusion that I was extreme ecto, because I didn't see any traits of any other type. But age is also a factor I guess. Im just experimenting with a lot of things at the present so I cant be sure.

Edit: My diet (being that I wasnt doing anything at home but working out and being lazy) consisted of about 7-8 meals a day. About 100 g's of protein a day as an estimate, but not sure of the fat % because I ate junk food or whatever I could find with high caloric value. calories usually ended up bieng around 2600 a day, sometimes 3200. Cant verify that either, because I dont know the value of baked potatoes and steak.

Bro, you're 17 years old! Have some patience, it will come with time and some maturity. But, you're gonna be a lot better off if you give your body the nutrients it needs instead of filling up with all those empty calories in the junk food. Consuming lots of calories in fat will NOT help you grow muscle. Take in quality carbs, and up that protein. I wouldn't worry too much about fat content at your age, but don't waste your time eating junk food 'cause it won't help you.

Love the enthusiam though. Keep at it!
