The reason that lower body workouts and gaining mass on your lower body can be so beneficial is because it is your body's hormonal response to release testosterone when muscles are put under stress.

Muscles in your lower body are very large and exercises such as squats work a large portion of your muscles. The more muscle that is stressed, the more testosterone is released.

LIFT BIG
Heavy resistance training stimulates a favourable anabolic hormonal response in the body. The larger the muscle mass placed under stress whilst training, the higher the testosterone response. Squats and deadlifts are examples of exercises involving large amounts of muscle, which acutely increase testosterone levels. So if your idea of a large muscle mass movement is a concentration curl or tricep kickback, think again.

This is why doing exercises such as squats can also improve your performance in other exercises and your overall gains.
