They're really juys trying to sell more stuff. Now you can take this drink 3x in a 2 hour period, and go through your supply 33% faster, and buy a refill more often!
Thats why.
If you are working hard in the gym, anything that takes much digesting will come back up.

During hard work outs I can't eat within about 45 minutes before my work out or else...

Learned this the hard way when I was with a trainer. Made a mad dash for the tennis courts and got some funny looks..

1 scoop Substance WPI + 6 Scoops Scivation Xtend + 1/2 Gallon of water

I Start drinking 15 min pre workout, through the workout, and i sip it during cardio.

Since using this combo my recovery time has gone through the roof.. I hardly ever get sore.

I drink my protein shakes (whey + fat free milk) post workout. I'v never heard to drinking one during your workout.

Companies generally give directions that will increase consumption and thus force you to buy more of their product (i.e., loading for creatine). After all, they are in the business of increasing their sales.

Re: Protein Shake During Workout

My best recommendation is to consume 1)a lean fast absorbing protein source such as a protein shake & 2)a fast acting acting carb source both before your weight training session & immediatly afterwards. Many supplement companies make a workout shake with both combined. You can also always just add glucose to your protein shake. I like to use AST's VP2 protein powder mixed with Creatine HSC, which has 5g creatine & 35g of fast acting carbs. Mix them together & they make a great pre & post-workout drink.

The logic in this is that intense excercise drastically drops insulin levels in the body that are our first energy source consumed. By spiking our insuling pre-workout it fuels our body to train hard. By the end of your workout it have dropped again however. If you want that protein to go to your muscles which are just begging for it at this point, you need to restore that insulin level again, so the use the same method immediately after your workout.

But, there is no need to have a protein shake during the workout if you follow this method.
