Flavored Oat Meal Packets

Just had a quick q,

Are the flavored oat meal packets any better or worse than the non - flavored ones (steel cut oats)?

Currently I'm eating the Quaker (Apple Cinnamon?) flavored ones.

thnx

Flavored oatmeal tastes sooo much better than just the plain stuff, unless you add your own flavoring... The regular oatmeal is, in my opinion, a little better for you because it has no added sugar or anything like that. Although sugar gives you better pumps during your workout, I would try to consume low levels unless you just can't live without the stuff.
Anyways, you can always add natural flavoring to the plain oatmeal such as strawberries, blueberries, bananas, etc. I think that it taste better when you add your own flavoring anyways.

The only problem with flavored oatmeal packets is that they are loaded with sugar, i think they make reduced sugar ones.. but they still have quite a bit. I have been eating regular quaker oats for quite a while now and i love them. Just get yourself some splenda packets to throw in there.. tastes awsome.

Awesome guys - thanks for the tips. I am going to check out the reduced sugar ones and then try splenda if I can handle that. No pain no gain I suppose? heh

I've been eating the plain oatmeal for years and have gotten use to it.

Re: Flavored Oat Meal Packets

As a nutritionist I'm going to put my 2 cents in here. The flavored oatmeal may appear to be just as healthy, and probably taste alot better than the traditional Quaker oatmeal, but in reality there's a difference. These "flavored packets" are packed with artificial flavoring, and vitamins. So basically your tricking your body--which people have got very good at doing these days. But your body isn't stupid and knows. The big deal with aritficial flavoring is that over time artificial sweetners and other crap you pump into your body can build up and is eventually what leads to so many chronic degenerative diseases in people. & Artificial or synthetic vitamins are pretty much worthless to the human body because they rae not properly absorbed into the blood stream. One way they trick you into thinking vitamins are real, is by labeling the package as "enriched w/vitamins." Stay away from foods that are 'enriched'.
So,If you want to eat oatmeal, which is good to eat when your training, but can't do w/o the flavor, just try mixing in a little 'natural' cinnamon or an tiny bit of honey. =) There hope that helped.
