Depending on your age it can or can't. If you're an adolescent and have not stopped growing, yes weight training and excercise does increase the probability you will grow taller, as you said, working out releases hormones in the body that stimulate growth and muscle recovery.

If you have stopped growing, lifting and excersize does not affect height because your brain is no longer developing hormones to grow in height, but your bones do continue to grow in girth until your 30's.
